SEO vs AEO: What's the Difference, and Which One Do You Need?

They share a foundation but aim at different outcomes. Here is how to decide where to put your effort.

The short answer

SEO gets you found in a list of Google results. AEO gets your business named inside an AI-generated answer. If you can only do one right now, do SEO — that is still where most searches begin. But the foundation is largely shared, so doing SEO properly gets you most of the way to AEO anyway.

What each one does

SEO — Search Engine Optimization

Optimises for a ranked list. Success is a position, and it is measurable: Search Console shows impressions, clicks and average position. It rewards technical health, relevant content, local signals and links from other sites.

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization

Optimises for being quoted inside a single composed answer from ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI or Google's AI results. Success is a mention. It rewards clear question-and-answer content, structured data, and a business identity that is consistent everywhere.

Where they overlap

More than most articles admit. Both depend on a site that loads quickly and can be crawled, content that answers real questions, accurate structured data, and consistent business details. Do that groundwork once and you have served both.

The genuine differences are narrower: SEO cares more about links and competitive keyword targeting; AEO cares more about being unambiguous, specific and easy to quote.

A useful way to hold it: SEO is competing for a place in a list. AEO is competing to be the example the answer uses.

Which should you do first?

For most Johor Bahru businesses the practical answer is to build both foundations at the same time, because the overlap makes the extra work small.

Questions

Common questions

No. AI answers are growing, but most searches still happen on Google and produce a list of results. AEO is an additional front, not a replacement.
Yes, and it is usually the efficient choice. The technical foundation — speed, crawlability, structured data, clear content — serves both, so doing them together costs far less than doing them separately.
SEO, mainly because it is measurable. You can see position and click changes in Search Console. AEO improvements are real but harder to observe, since AI engines publish no ranking data.
Mostly the same content, structured well. AEO benefits from a genuine FAQ section written in the words customers actually use, which also tends to help SEO.
