AI assistants are becoming a starting point for finding businesses. AEO is how you make sure yours is the one they mention.
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization: structuring your website so AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google's AI results, Gemini, Google AI and Copilot can read your content, understand what your business does, and quote you when someone asks them a question.
Traditional search hands you a list of links and lets you choose. An answer engine gives one composed reply, sometimes naming a handful of businesses. If your business is not in that reply, you were not shortlisted — and unlike page two of Google, there is no page two to be on.
Two things have changed. A meaningful share of people now ask an assistant before they search, particularly for research-heavy decisions like choosing a clinic, an accountant or a training provider. And Google now places an AI summary above the traditional results for many searches, which changes what gets clicked.
The practical implication for a Malaysian SME is that almost nobody locally has done anything about this yet. The ground is far less contested than traditional search.
Nobody outside these companies knows the full mechanics, and anyone claiming otherwise is guessing. But the observable patterns are consistent:
AI engines do not publish rankings or give you a dashboard. You cannot see how many people asked about your industry, and results vary between one query and the next. Anyone selling guaranteed AI visibility is overselling.
What you can do is monitor: ask the assistants the questions your customers would ask and record whether you appear. It is sampling rather than measurement, and it is the honest state of the discipline today.
